Editorial Branch Positions
AJYR offers several volunteer roles within its Editorial Branch. Volunteers may serve in one or multiple roles, depending on experience and availability. Assignments are always optional—you may accept or decline based on your schedule.
All volunteers can set Unavailable Dates during periods such as examinations, conferences, travel, or thesis preparation.
Reviewers
Reviewers form the foundation of AJYR’s educational peer-review process.
As a Reviewer, you will:
- Provide constructive scientific and presentation feedback to student authors
- Comment on clarity of research questions, methodology, data presentation, interpretation, and conclusions
- Focus on learning and improvement, not novelty or impact metrics
- Maintain a positive, respectful, and encouraging tone
Time Commitment
- Complete each review within 2 weeks of accepting the assignment
- Typically receive 2–8 review invitations per year, depending on expertise
Associate Editors (AEs)
Associate Editors oversee the scientific review stage of submitted manuscripts.
Responsibilities include:
- Assigning appropriate reviewers to manuscripts
- Monitoring the review process and timelines
- Synthesizing reviewer feedback into a clear and structured Editor’s Decision Letter
- Ensuring comments are constructive, understandable, and considerate of authors’ available resources
Time Commitment
- Approximately 4 manuscripts per year
- Scientific review cycle completed within 6 weeks per manuscript
Copy Editors (CEs)
Copy Editors focus on improving clarity, grammar, structure, and formatting while preserving the author’s voice.
As a Copy Editor, you will:
- Edit manuscripts using tracked changes
- Improve sentence clarity, structure, and scientific tone
- Ensure consistency in figures, tables, references, and terminology
- Write a brief Copy Editor’s note summarizing recommended changes
- Encourage and motivate student authors through supportive feedback
Time Commitment
- At least 6 manuscripts per year
- Around 1–2 hours per manuscript, with a 1-week turnaround
Proofing Editors (PEs)
Proofing Editors prepare manuscripts for final publication and online display.
Responsibilities include:
- Formatting manuscripts into the AJYR publication layout
- Placing figures, tables, equations, and captions correctly
- Coordinating final author approvals
- Publishing finalized articles on the AJYR website
Previous layout or design experience is helpful but not required—training and access to necessary tools will be provided.
Time Commitment
- At least 6 manuscripts annually
- Initial proof within 2 weeks, finalization within 2 weeks after author feedback
Mentors
Mentors support high-school students through the research process while upholding academic rigor, ethical practice, and independent thinking.
Mentorship at Avishkaran is strictly advisory and educational—not authorship-based.
As a Mentor, you will:
- Support students in refining research questions and study design
- Guide appropriate methodologies across STEM, Humanities, and Mathematics
- Help students structure manuscripts clearly and logically
- Provide constructive, formative feedback during revision stages
- Reinforce ethical research conduct, proper citation, and data integrity
Mentors do not:
- Write, edit, or co-author student manuscripts
- Conduct research on behalf of students
- Influence or determine research conclusions or outcomes
Time Commitment
- Flexible and project-based
- Typically 1–2 student manuscripts per review cycle
Workshop Leaders
Workshop Leaders design and deliver skill-building sessions that equip students with the tools required to conduct, communicate, and publish research responsibly.
Areas of focus include:
- Research fundamentals and question framing
- Scientific and academic writing
- Data analysis and interpretation
- Ethics, plagiarism awareness, and responsible AI use
- Peer review and publication processes
- Discipline-specific methods in sciences, humanities, and mathematics
Responsibilities include:
- Designing age-appropriate, rigorous workshop content
- Delivering engaging and interactive sessions
- Encouraging critical thinking and discussion
- Sharing learning resources and recommended readings
- Aligning sessions with Avishkaran’s publication cycles
Time Commitment
- Short-term, session-based involvement
- One-time or recurring workshops based on availability
